Elounda Island Villas

History

Elounda Island Villas is privileged to be standing by the ruins of a very important, in the ancient times, city named "Olous", which was sunken probably because of an enormous earthquake caused by Santorini's volcano explosion. Olous was situated on the left and the right side of the causeway that connects Elounda with Spinalonga peninsula and Elounda Island Villas. Olous was a very important city and harbor in Minoan times, with it's own currency and a population of over 40,000. Here stood the statue of Vritomartes and finds in the area including rock tombs with funery objects are on a display in the Agios Nikolaos museum. When the weather is calm the remains of Olous can be seen on the sea bottom. When snorkelling through, a number of houses can be seen together with the old harbour wall.

Agios Nikolaos museum, built in the 1960's, houses finds mainly from Lasithi area, representing every period from the Neolithic to Late Roman times, though the larger part of the display consists of objects from the Minoan period.
